Economic Report on the Job Market in Chicago and Other Major Cities

This morning I released the results of an economic report using BLS data looking at the economic performance of major cities in the U.S.

Chicago has had quite a year--best job market improvement among any of the large cities: unemployment rate dropping 1.7 percentage points and the employed fraction of the city's population rising more than 2% for the year.  Both were tops among large cities.

  1. Mr. Goolsbee,

The US has plentiful Nat Gas to fuel factories, plentiful labor, good eastern transportation network, game changing port trade coming to eastern ports with Panama Canal (2014 completion) expansion from 8500 TEU to 1200 TEU per ship.

The Eastern US is ripe for major revitalization and expansion of factories in the south and former rust belt.

These changes are going to happen. It's just a matter of timing and any politician that gets on top of the issue will benefit.

  2. Mr. Goolsbee,

Someone sent me this video: www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/EW5IdwltaAc?rel=0

The person who sent it to me is a frequent purveyor of garbage politics, but the internet sheds no light on the amount of spin required to make the pronouncements this guy makes. So I am asking you to briefly address the video for those of us who are concerned in a dispassionate, non-political way about how we dig ourselves out of this hole. Thanks.
